There is a growing need to show students the relevance and “real-world” uses for mathematics before learning occurs. Contextual teaching reaches more students and allows them to grasp otherwise abstract math concepts. In cooperation with Indiana educators, CORD will be conducting workshops to help teachers infuse contextual-based learning into their math classrooms. During this workshop participants will learn:
• How to answer the question “Why do I have to learn this?” Teachers need to be able to show the relevance of content to student experience or interest since most students learn best when such connections are made.
• Innovative teaching strategies that blend academic concepts with workplace applications.
• Why teaching abstract concepts through concrete experiences will enhance your students’ ability to learn and retain.
• How to motivate students through group learning experiences.
• What materials are available to help teachers use these strategies.
CORD's professional development programs are designed to enable participants to implement contextual teaching, a proven methodology that reaches a broad cross section of learning styles. CORD advocates the five elements of the "REACT" strategy for contextual teaching across the curriculum:
• Relating—Learning in the context of life experiences
• Experiencing—Learning through exploration, discovery, and invention
• Applying—When concepts are presented within the context of their use
• Cooperating—Learning through the context of sharing, responding,
¬and interpersonal communication
• Transferring—Using knowledge in a new context or situation
About the presenter:
Claudia Maness, National Implementation Manager for CORD Communications, spent 13 years as a mathematics classroom teacher and has seen firsthand the benefits of contextual teaching. For the past several years she has traveled across the county conducting workshops at various state and national conferences. Her services are frequently sought for conducting specialized teacher workshops for school districts of all sizes.
