Short Description
A Framework for Improving Whole-School Comprehension Instruction – A Day with Dr. Taffy Raphael
Detailed Description
Question Answer Relationships, or QAR, has been used by teachers from preschool through high school for over 25 years. In its simplest form, QAR provides teachers and students with a common language to use across content areas to articulate the connection between questions that are asked, texts the questions refer to, and the readers’ background knowledge. More recently, QAR has been used as a framework to bring coherence to comprehension instruction within and across grade levels. QAR has also been used as a responsible form of test preparation. In this session, we will focus on QAR for framing comprehension instruction within and across grade levels. Taffy E. Raphael is a former intermediate grade classroom teacher, now on the Literacy, Language and Culture faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Raphael’s research has focused on comprehension strategy instruction (e.g., Question Answer Relationships), strategy instruction in writing, and frameworks for literacy curriculum and instruction (e.g., Book Club Plus).
